The British designer Stella McCartney paid tribute to Alexander McQueen, in her very pared down fashion collection for autumn/winter 2010-11. With sharp tailoring, luxurious cashmere knits and matching trousers comprised no-nonsense daywear that was followed by subtly sequinned and lace evening wear that made up a beautifully managed collection.

She started it with warm camel and black horizontal stripes on a jacket and then a Sixties style tunic.

Graphic, linear minidresses were offset by nicely fitted trousers.

Bright orange ribbed knits or teeny weeny polo neck dresses added a flash of colour, a new concentration on technique put these pieces in a different realm to the rest.

Calvin Klein Collection

Francisco Costa sent out another fabulous collection for Calvin Klein. Costa said he had been inspired by Ferne Jacobs, a Los Angeles-based artist who creates fibreworks or small tabletop sculptures.

That would explain the organic shapes of the dresses, all of which hung loose from the shoulder, with a curved hem, bell shaped skirt.

A puff-sleeved poplin frock curved around the shoulders like a shrug, making it look as though the Pillsbury Doughboy was embracing the model.

A droopy gray knit coat was slimmer on top with an undulating wave pattern at the hip and fingertip grazing sleeves, as if it had been pulled out the wash and hung to dry, or was melting in the heat of a particularly humid day.

Costa employed many textile tricks cause fabric manipulation being one of his main loves. We particularly liked a series of silk and mohair jacquard pieces that had a casual, weightless appeal and appeared, from a distance, to have been charred.

Elsewhere, tank dresses were ruched draped, gathered and woven – and one standout shift was pleated to resemble waves cresting all over the model’s body.
